What does this measure?

The average number of children receiving assistance each month, per 1,000 children under 18.

Why is this important?

This measure indicates the number of children dependent upon government assistance for their basic needs. It also shows the demands for help placed on the welfare system.

How is the Greater Capital Region performing?

In 2007, 40 children per 1,000 in the region received public assistance, lower than the state rate of 69. The region's rate has been basically steady since 2001, while the state rate fell 21%. Albany County's rate declined 21% over the time period, while Rensselaer's increased 34%. In 2007, Rensselaer had the highest rate at 59 while Saratoga had the lowest at 6.
