What does this measure?

The number of people receiving Supplemental Security Income, per 1,000 residents.

Why is this important?

SSI benefits are intended to meet the basic economic needs of aged (65 and over), blind, and disabled persons with little or no income. This indicator is a measure of the number of needy individuals in the community beyond those who are receiving public assistance.

How is the Greater Capital Region performing?

In 2007, there were 21 SSI recipients per 1,000 residents in the region, compared to a statewide rate of 34 and a national rate of 24. The regional, state and national rates registered almost no change from 2001. The regional rate has remained consistently below both state and national rates, though closer to national rates. While most counties saw little change, the rate in Schenectady County increased 18% and was the highest in the region in 2007 at 30.

Notes about the data

The data do not necessarily reflect the actual number of people eligible for SSI, only those receiving it. CGR calculated rates using Census population estimates.
